John grabbed me, and we held on so tight I was afraid ribs might break.

“Did you have even a smidgen of doubt that I’d show?” I asked him.

“I’m so glad you still want to marry me!”

I pulled back and was spellbound. John’s blond hair was luminescent in the sun, and his glimmering eyes reminded me of Lake Placid. “I’m glad you do too, you silly ass! Let me look at you.”

Oh, fucking shit. John looked so good I had to blink to be sure he was real. Him, in that black tux, the one I couldn’t wait to get off of him. “Fuck,” I whispered, “let’s just skip the ceremony and go straight to the wedding night.”

He laughed, and that’s when I got a whiff of his cologne, redolent of a fall night I’d never forget. It wasn’t just a cologne; it was the cologne. “Oh God, babe, you remembered! The cologne, from that night we went to the party!”

John’s grin was everything, and he put a hand on my cheek. “You do remember! I thought you probably wouldn’t.”

“It was the most beautiful thing I ever smelled.” I wouldn’t tell him about that time I was in his closet alone, wondering where he was. How I sprayed the cologne on T-shirts of his that I wore until they fell apart.

“I never wore Dark Night again until today. I think I was always hoping for what you said that night. Now I’ll wear it every year on our anniversary.”

Three years earlier, I’d taken John to a party during our first year of law school. When I got to his house to pick him up, he was wearing the same cologne, which went straight to my dick, just like it was doing today. “I wanna smell that at my wedding,” I’d said, without thinking about how it might sound.

“More of that stuff, tonight!” I said.

“All you want, bad boy.”

“Hey lovebirds!” Cait pushed her way between us. “I hate to break up the moment, but the photographer’s waiting. Time for pictures. Follow me.”
